The Winter 2018 Wine Club Selection awaits you.

Harvest 2017 will certainly go down in the history books. There were four of the longest and hottest heatwaves ever and the devastating wildfires putting the whole wine industry in danger. Although it was a challenging year, Winemaker Robert Rex explains that this is a winemaker’s year. As Robert puts it: “When everything is perfect, it is easy to make good wine. Challenging vintages, however, showcase the best winemakers.” We look forward to tasting the miraculous 2017 survivors.

Now more than ever, we are reminded of the importance of spending time with loved ones for the holidays. We hope you enjoy the 2018 Winter Wine Club Selection. Raise a glass and toast all the first responders, for whom we will always be grateful. As always, please allow your wines 2 to 3 weeks resting time after their journey. Happy Holidays from us at Deerfield to you and your family!

2014 White Rex
North Coast
A new standard in white wine blending.

One Bottle

Winemaking is like cooking. The best dishes are a combination of flavors, of subtle nuances spread around the palate. White Rex follows this lead, each varietal playing an important role in the overall experience. Pinot Grigio is the base and brings the bouquet and flavor of white peaches and focus in the mid-palate. The Riesling brings Granny Smith apples and focus on the back-side palate. The Sauvignon Blanc adds tropical fruit flavors, particularly pineapple and mangos and focuses on the front palate. The Chardonnay adds a long finish, depth and complexity, from the center of your palate around the sides to the back.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc
Sonoma Valley
Crisp and refreshing.

One Bottle

We’ve been making Sauvignon Blanc from Jon Peterson’s vineyard in Kenwood since 1984. The vineyard sits in a low cool spot in the valley, perfect for SB. Sauvignon Blanc grapes are some of the tastiest of all wine grapes. They possess so much flavor and nuance that we just have to ferment it cleanly to get this spectacular wine, which is bright yet rich in flavors of tropical fruit, grapefruit, and citrus. The nose is true and fresh with no hint of green grass, which we consider defects in so many Sauvignon Blancs, caused by stressed yeast and poor techniques. There is no better SB on the planet. It is our favorite choice before the meal or chatting with friend on the veranda. Our favorite pairing is Sole with beurre blanc sauce. It will also pair nicely with a lemon juice dressing salad and will even compliment Asparagus.

2012 Estate Syrah
Sonoma Valley
Biodynamically grown, certified organic. A true expression of terroir

One Bottle

This Syrah is from the organic vineyard that surrounds our wetlands. Syrah’s flavor profile generally focuses near the bottom of the palate, grounded and earthy. This one is different. It shows generous dark berry flavors in the center of the palate, expanding in all directions. This is the perfect BBQ wine.

2005 Gold
Late Harvest Botrytis, Sauvignon Blanc

One Bottle

The Late Harvest Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc is a unique wine. Under rare and ideal conditions Botrytis Cinerea mold grows on the grapes late in the season, engulfing the clusters and concentrating the sugars. We stop the fermentation before the wine becomes dry, retaining natural sugars, and a distinct apricot flavor from the Botrytis. The combination is a unique taste experience unlike anything else in nature. As Gold is poured, your senses are tantalized by its golden hue. This wine is dessert in a glass.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon
Sonoma Mountain

One Bottle

88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

Sonoma Mountain grows great Cabernet Sauvignon. Ivy Glen Vineyard was planted on its upper Sonoma Valley facing slope about 45 years ago. It is Winemaker Robert Rex’s favorite Cabernet from the great 2013 Vintage. Three of our favorite blenders fill in the palate; Malbec at the lower back, Cabernet Franc at the top, and Petit Verdot at the lower front. Thirty months in French and American oak barrels added complexity and depth.

2013 Sangiovese
Alpicella Vineyard, Sonoma County

One Bottle

A bed of ripe strawberries on a summer morning

Sangiovese is the national grape of Italy and it grows everywhere. Americans are still getting to know this delicious varietal that emotes roses and ripe strawberries. We’ve been making Sangiovese from Dan Sanchez’s mountain top vineyard for 11 years. We blended in small amounts of a few varietals to accentuate the fruit flavor of the Sangiovese and give the wine a longer finish. The wine was aged 40 months in used oak barrels, producing a subtle influence of oak flavor and a big influence on smoothness. Our 2013 Sangiovese pairs beautifully with Italian cuisine. It is ready to drink now and our Clean Wine® techniques assures that this wine will remain delicious well into the 2020s.
