The Spring 2018 Wine Club Selection awaits you.

The days are getting longer, the vineyards have been pruned, the daffodils are up, and bud break will be next signaling the beginning of Harvest 2018. The winemakers are busy bottling up wines to ready for the upcoming harvest and topping the wines aging in the barrels.

As you know, Deerfield ages their wines longer than most California wineries because, as Winemaker Robert Rex says, “Wine gains complexities in the barrel that you just don’t get from the same time spent in the bottle.” The wines in the Spring Wine Club shipments are, indeed, a testament to this philosophy. We have selected them because they are singing. We believe in selecting wines that are ready to drink now, and because of our Clean Wine® process, Deerfield wines age well. Enjoy!

Winemaking is like cooking. The best dishes are a combination of flavors and subtle nuances that fill the palate. White Rex follows this lead, each varietal playing an important role in the overall experience. Pinot Grigio is the base and brings the bouquet and flavor of white peaches to the mid-palate. Riesling brings Granny Smith apples and focus to the back-side of your palate. Sauvignon Blanc adds tropical fruit flavors, particularly pineapple and mangos and focuses on the front palate. Chardonnay adds a long finish, depth and complexity to round out the palate.

Robert’s proprietary blend, Red Rex, is Deerfield’s most popular wine. It is made up of eight varietals, and each one is there for a reason. The idea is to give you a full flavor experience by reaching every corner of your palate. Red Rex is fruit forward, mouth ¬filling, smooth and delicious right now. It’s an easy drinking red wine that pairs with almost any food and never disappoints. It is cleanly made with low histamines and low sulfites.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

75% Cabernet, 11% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Syrah
The color is deep, dark and brilliant. The nose is true to Cabernet, with a bit of leather, a dash of allspice, and cedar. The taste unfolds in long linear strokes from front to back. The tannin is definitively Cabernet typical, without being obtrusive or dominant. All the elements are harmonious and integrated. The wine is dry yet gentle for a Cab. The finish is long and lingering. It is an elegant, friendly Cabernet that is perfect with red meat and grilled foods.

2012 Malbec
Running Rabbit Ranch

Rick and Laura Wilson's Ruanning Rabbit Ranch lies on a west facing slope at the top of Sonoma Valley. Its rocky volcanic soil produces intensly flavored grapes. Specialized whole berry fermentation captured this terroir in the wine. Malbec's focus is at the bottom back of your palate with blackberry flavors. Cabernet Franc gives the Malbec lift and a chocolate note. The Zinfandel accentuates floral, spice and round oak nuances in the mid-palate. The tannins are soft and the finish long. The 2012 vintage was stellar. It produced elegant wines with great depth with an emphasis on fruit. This wine is very enjoyable now and will age well for at least 10 more years.

2012 Cabernet Franc

76% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 4% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot

Cabernet Franc is one of the five Nobel Bordeaux grapes. The 2012 Cabernet Franc has rich dark chocolate notes enhanced by the magic of blending with its Bordeaux cousins. It was aged for 36 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. This dense, concentrated Cabernet Franc, displays a wealth of intense black cherry, blackberry aromas. The wine reveals complex layers of luscious black fruit flavors that meld with oak nuances and polished, ripe tannins throughout a remarkably persistent finish.
