The Fall 2017 Wine Club Selection is here!

There’s a shift in the air. You can feel the energy in the Sonoma Valley building in anticipation of the upcoming harvest. Due to an extremely warm summer, we chose to delay leafing, a process where some leaves are plucked from the vine to help the maturation process. We left the leaves on to provide some shade for the grapes and reduce the chance of sunburn. Both Winemaker Cecilia Valdivia and Vineyard Manager Ricardo Juarez agree: This year’s crop of our estate Syrah, which is biodynamically and organically farmed, is looking quite promising. The grapes wait patiently to begin their journey from vine to bottle. In this selection, we’ve included a delightful mix old and new friends to come together to welcome you to the 2017 Deerfield Ranch Winery harvest. Make sure to let the wines recover from their voyage before opening once they arrive.

2011 @Cabernet
Peterson Vineyard
Sonoma Valley

One Bottle

The 2011 @Cabernet has everything and more than you expect from a Cabernet.  Cabernet is the dominant flavor and forms the foundation and long finish. The Cabernet Franc adds a dark chocolate nuance and the Merlot fills the middle palate. The Petit Verdot adds a spice, and the Malbec adds blackberry flavors to the blend.

2012 Estate Syrah
Sonoma Valley

One Bottle

This Syrah is from the organic vineyard in front of the winery.  Syrah’s flavor profile generally focuses near the bottom of the palate, grounded and earthy. This one is different.  It shows generous dark berry flavors in the center of the palate, expanding in all directions

2012 Merlot Cuveé
Sonoma Valley

One Bottle

Layered with enticing aromas of black plum, espresso, violets and red flower, this full bodied Merlot shows a robust core of dried cherry, blackberry and baking spice on a seamless finish of fine-grained firm tannin.

2009 Cabernet
Zukowski Vineyard
Knights Valley

One Bottle

This wine starts quietly on the nose. You will first perceive notes of cedar and dark chocolate that open up into a concentrated black fruit after a moment in the glass. On the palate, this wine shows a subtle mixture of rich, dark flavors: blackberry, cassis, and juicy red plum vying for attention against a backdrop of lush tannins. Every character hinted at before develops with a startling intensity. Black fruit integrated with elegantly spicy oak. The finish is long and deep, with luscious candied fruit characters.

2012 Petit Verdot
Sonoma Valley

One Bottle

90% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec

Petit Verdot is best known as a grape used in the blending of French Bordeaux wines and California Meritage wines. It adds tannin, acid, and color to those blends. By itself, it is a powerful combination of dark berries, chocolate, espresso and leather nuances focused on the front of your palate. Malbec accentuates the fruit on the back side and Cabernet gives it a long finish. Grapes from three Petit Verdot vineyards were used in this blend. Petit Verdot is a unique wine that pairs well with grilled foods, rich sauces and dark chocolate.  We produced 170 cases.

2012 Zinfandel
Sonoma Valley

One Bottle

2012 was a great vintage. Following three very challenging vintages, it reminded us how joyful it can be when Mother Nature cooperates. Beginning with an aromatic entry, like a potpourri of black Boysenberries and red raspberries, explodes in the middle palate with big round fruit that adds strawberries and ripe cherries, all together, the essence of Zinfandel grapes.
