The Fall 2017 Wine Club Selection is here!

There’s a shift in the air. You can feel the energy in the Sonoma Valley building in anticipation of the upcoming harvest. Due to an extremely warm summer, we chose to delay leafing, a process where some leaves are plucked from the vine to help the maturation process. We left the leaves on to provide some shade for the grapes and reduce the chance of sunburn. Both Winemaker Cecilia Valdivia and Vineyard Manager Ricardo Juarez agree: This year’s crop of our estate Syrah, which is biodynamically and organically farmed, is looking quite promising. The grapes wait patiently to begin their journey from vine to bottle. In this selection, we’ve included a delightful mix old and new friends to come together to welcome you to the 2017 Deerfield Ranch Winery harvest. Make sure to let the wines recover from their voyage before opening once they arrive.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc

We’ve been making Sauvignon Blanc from Jon Peterson’s vineyard in Kenwood since 1984. The vineyard sits in a low cool spot in the valley, perfect for SB. Sauvignon Blanc grapes are some of the tastiest of all wine grapes. They possess so much flavor and nuance that we just have to ferment it cleanly to get this spectacular wine, which is bright yet rich in flavors of tropical fruit, grapefruit and citrus. The nose is true and fresh with no hint of green grass or cat pee, which we consider defects in so many Sauvignon Blancs, caused by stressed yeast and and poor techniques.  There is no better SB on the planet. It is our favorite choice before the meal or chatting with friend on the veranda. Our favorite pairing is Sole with bur blanc sauce. It will also pair nicely with a lemon juice dressing salad and will even compliment Asparagus.

2014 Chardonnay, Blonde Ambition

Blonde Ambition Chardonnay is a tribute to PJ Rex, the winemaker's wife, who inspired Robert to become a winemaker. 

The Sobre Vista Vineyard, nestled on a Sonoma Valley hillside in Glen Ellen, was first planted in 1873. It is an exceptional terroir for Chardonnay. Our winemaking techniques accentuate complexity and mouth feel, so Blonde Ambition will pair with almost any food and is delicious on its own.

Sonoma Cabernets have their own style; dictated to a certain degree by a cooler climate in Sonoma compared to Napa Valley. Deerfield’s Cabernets are more elegant than the big Napa Cabs. We blend our Cabernet with other Bordeaux varietals to create a multi-dimensional wine that changes as you drink it. It evolves and holds your interest longer than you expect.

75% Merlot, 12% Malbec, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

Sonoma Valley is one of the best places in the world to grow Merlot. It has the perfect soil and weather conditions. The best Merlots are blends, even if it doesn’t say so on the label.  The Deerfield @Merlot has the forward fruit, low acid, and soft tannins that you love in Merlot with the depth, lift, and finish that you find in a Cabernet. This is a wine priced for drinking any night of the week and with any meal. This @Merlot is lovely by itself and pairs well with hamburgers or Mac and Cheese.

2014 Pinot Noir

Noir. A flowery, complex and varietally correct nose promises a true Pinot experience.
Layered flavors expand in the mid palate in perfect balance, rolling backwards and
expanding outwards, evolving into a lingering finish. As with the greatest Pinots, this
one is feminine and delicate and pairs with a wider variety of foods than any other

2012 Cabernet Franc

76% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 4% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot

The wine was aged for 36 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. This dense, concentrated Cabernet Franc displays a wealth of intense black cherry, blackberry aromas. Rounded it on the palate, the wine reveals complex layers of luscious black fruit flavors that meld with oak nuances and polished, ripe tannins throughout a remarkably persistent finish.
