The Fall 2009 Wine Club Selection brings some
gems out of the cellar, the last drop of a few of our favorites
and highlights of the future of Sonoma wine. For the first time
we are inviting visitors to the winery and our new tasting room
in the grand room of the cave during the harvest. It is your chance
to experience the harvest first hand. This is a unique opportunity
to see behind the scenes how we make world-class wines
.
We continue to produce wines that are lauded by the wine community.
Our 2006 Pinot Noir, Russian River, just won DOUBLE GOLD at the
2009 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. We only made 275 cases of this
spectacular wine so if you’d like some order it soon.
2006 Sauvignon Blanc – One Bottle
Wine is an art, but not meant to be placed on a shelf and looked
at; wine is meant to be poured and enjoyed with family and friends.
This S.B. is one we wish would never end. However, with this shipment
the 2006 S.B. sings it’s last chorus. A rich lullaby structured
by traditional tank fermentation then softened by barrel fermentation.
The combination of fermentation styles adds depth. The result
is a well-balanced white wine with surprising diversity. Retail:

2007 Chardonnay, Los Chamizal – One bottle
We pride ourselves in finding the best fruit in Sonoma County.
Few growers exemplify this better than Peter Haywood with his
Los Chamizal Vineyard. This lightly oaked Chardonnay was aged
sur-lees for 10 months, and stirred every three weeks to create
a multi-dimensional, well balanced, food friendly wine. It is
ready to drink now and will age up to five years. Retail: $35
2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast –
One bottle
Winemaking is a combination of art and science; cooking and chemistry.
It’s about the quality of the ingredients, and the interplay
of flavors, textures and technique. This blend, done by taste,
has its roots in centuries of Bordeaux winemaking and Robert’s
37 years of experience in blending wines.
When we talk about wine, we talk about where we taste it on our
palate in addition to what it tastes like. Each grape flavor focuses
on a particular region of the palate, creating a three dimensional
experience. A good blend will reach every corner of the palate.
This is our art and sets us apart from big wineries, that make
wine by recipe or cost and don’t take time to taste.
Retail: $30
2004 Shiraz Cuvée – One bottle
Much like the Merlot Cuvée, this blend exemplifies the
quality and style of winemaking at the Deerfield Ranch Winery
and shows what a varietal can offer in the hands of a skilled
vintner. While Deerfield turns the head of many tasters, this
wine is getting the nod from the entire wine community. Shortly
after the 2009 North of the Gate wine competition gave the 2004
Shiraz Cuvée a DOUBLE GOLD and BEST IN CLASS, Robert Parker
gave it 89+ points. This wine is great example of Deerfield producing
a richly colored, deeply flavored, intensely powerful wine with
a full mouth-feel that is at the same time smooth and gentle.
Retail: $24
2005 Red Rex – One Bottle
Many of our wines find their roots in the proud tradition of winemaking
in France and Italy, but more than anything else, flavor determines
what makes a good blend. With that in mind we make the Red Rex,
a multi-dimensional blend with seven different grape varietals,
each playing an intricate part of the whole. Few wines can stand
next to the Red Rex, a robust array of well-balanced flavors packaged
within a smooth drinking wine. This wine has yet to meet a person,
meal or situation for which it is not a perfect fit. Retail: $28
2001 DRX – One bottle
The DRX is truly the best of the best. Every barrel in our 23,000
sq ft wine cave is tasted and evaluated. If the barrel is well
balanced and is a good representation of both its varietal and
the vineyard, then we mark it with an X. After two years of aging
in the barrels the varietals are blended by taste and returned
to the best barrels for a third year, softening the tannins and
adding complexity in a way that only time can do.

Santé,
Robert and PJ

As
usual, many of the small-lot wines are running low
and will soon be sold out. If any of these are amongst your favorites,
now's the time to add a few to your cellar.
- 2000
Gold

The Y'quem beater, the penultimate botrytis wine, made about 3
times every decade, 20 cases left
- 2005
Old Vine Zinfandel, Buchignani Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

We hardly ever open it, we hardly ever talk about it, it wins
gold medals and has articles written about it (93 points in the
recent Wine Enthusiast), it enjoys a cult following,
two months supply left.
- 2003
Pinot Noir, Cohn Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Too bad this is running out because it will continue to improve
with age for at least another 5 years. Drink some now an dut some
down, there's nothing like well aged Pinot and '03 was a good
vintage for aging.
75 cases left.
- 2003
Ladi's Cuvée

This will be the last Ladi Cuvée for years. As mentioned
above with the Ladi Meritage, we've ripped out most of the Cab
and all of the Merlot. This
sensual blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah is the ultimate experience
for fans of Ladi wines. It's so huge it boggles the mind and it
tastes like velvet. It too will age well. 110 cases left.
- 2003
Ladi's Syrah

Ladi's Syrah is blended into several other wines, inlcuding the
new Shiraz Cuvée and Red Rex. It not only adds to the backbone
of these wines but it adds generous amounts of rich blackberry
flavor. It has hints of root beer, molassas cookies, tobacco,
plum skins and toasted cedar. The flavors begin at the bottom
of the palate and explode upwards, what a treat. 150 cases left.
